The Ukrainian hryvnia (UAH) is the official currency of Ukraine. It is represented by the symbol "₴" and is abbreviated as "грн" in Ukrainian.
Users
The Ukrainian hryvnia is used by the people of Ukraine for everyday transactions and as a legal tender for all types of goods and services within the country. As the national currency, it is widely accepted across the country, and its use is mandated by the Ukrainian government.
History
The modern Ukrainian hryvnia was introduced on September 2, 1996, as a replacement for the previous currency, the karbovanets. The introduction of the hryvnia was part of Ukraine's economic reforms following its independence from the Soviet Union in 1991. The currency's name "hryvnia" is derived from the historical unit of weight used for silver and gold in the medieval Kievan Rus.
Notes and Coins
The Ukrainian hryvnia is available in both banknotes and coins.
Banknotes
The banknotes come in various denominations and are issued by the National Bank of Ukraine. As of my last update in September 2021, the common banknote denominations were 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200, and 500 hryvnias. These banknotes feature notable figures from Ukrainian history, cultural symbols, and architectural landmarks. The design of the banknotes has evolved over the years, and new security features have been introduced to prevent counterfeiting.
Coins
Ukrainian hryvnia coins come in several denominations, including 1, 2, 5, 10, 25, and 50 kopiykas (subunits of the hryvnia). There are also 1 hryvnia coins. While the kopiyka coins are still in circulation, they are of limited value and are rarely used for day-to-day transactions due to inflation.
It's important to note that the information about specific denominations and designs of Ukrainian hryvnia banknotes and coins may have changed after my last update in September 2021. Currency designs and denominations can be subject to updates and modifications by the National Bank of Ukraine over time.
