Egyptian pound users

The Egyptian pound is the currency of Egypt (officially the Arab Republic of Egypt) which locates mainly within North Africa.  The Egyptian pound is also used in the Gaza strip of the Palestinian Authority.

Egypt declared the independence from the United Kingdom on February 28, 1922.

Egyptian pound history

The Egyptian pound was introduced in 1834 and replaced the Egyptian piaster as the chief unit of currency at a rate of 1 pound = 100 piastre (while 1 piastre= 40 para =120 akce). The piaster has been continued to be used as a subdivision of pound. The subdivision of piaster, milliemes was created in 1916 and 1 piastre =10 milliemes (malleem).

Egyptian pound coins and banknotes

The Egyptian pound is subdivided into 100 piastre or qirsh or 1000 milliemes.

Currently in circulation coins are in denominations of 5, 10, 20, 25, 50 piastres and 1 pound, and banknotes are in denominations of 5, 10, 25, 50 piastres and 1, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200 pounds.
