The Guatemalan quetzal is the currency of Guatemala (officially the Republic of Guatemala), which is a country in Central America. Guatemala declared independence from Spain in 1821. During the years of 1824 to 1839, Guatemala became a part of a short-lived sovereign state named the Federal Republic of Central America (existed from 1823 to 1840), which consisted of the present-day nations of Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Mexico. Until 1839, Guatemala became an independent country.
