History:

The Syrian Pound has a long history dating back to the early 20th century. Before Syria gained independence from France in 1946, the currency used was the Syrian pound issued by the Banque de Syrie (Bank of Syria). After independence, the Central Bank of Syria took over the issuance of the currency.
