Romanian leu users

Romanian leu is the currency of Romania which is a country locates at the intersection of Central and Southeastern Europe, and is bordered with Black Sea and the states of Hungary, Servia, Ukraine, Moldova and Bulgaria. Romania has been a member of the European Union since January 2007 and it is expected to adopt the euro by 2015.

Leu is also used in Moldova whose currency is Moldovan leu (currency code:MDL). Both Romanian leu and Moldovan leu are divided into 100 bani. As of date Jan 30th, 2013, the exchange rate between Romania leu (RON) and Moldovan leu (MDL) is 1 RON = 3.7243MDL.  

Romanian leu history

Leu was adopted as official currency since Romania independency in 1867, with one leu equals to 5 grams of 83.5% silver or 0.29032 of gold. After had been experienced hyperinflation for decades, Romania reformed the previous leu (Currency code: ROL, being used during the year between 1952 to 2005) to a new leu (Currency code: RON) at a rate of 1 RON = 10,000 ROL.
