Myanmar kyat (Burmese kyat) users

The Myanmar kyat (also known as Burmese kyat) is the currency of Myanmar (also known as Burma) which is a country in Southeast Asia.

Burma became an independent republic from the United Kingdom on January 4, 1948, named the Union of Burma. The country’s name was renamed from Burma to Myanmar in 1989, official full name as the Republic of the Union of Myanmar. However some countries still continue to use Union of Burma instead. Both the words of Burma and Myanmar are derived from the name of the Bamar which are the dominant Burmese ethnic group.

Myanmar kyat (Burmese kyat) history

The currently circulating Myanmar kyat (Burmese kyat) was introduced on July 1, 1952, replaced the Burmese rupee at par. It is a decimal currency with subdivision 100 pya.

The first kyat was used in Burma going back to the years of 1852-1889. The first kyat coinage was denominated of both silver and gold and normally with the rate of 16 silver kyat equivalent to 1 gold kyat. During the years of 1852 to 1942, Burmese rupee had been used. It was Indian rupee but featuring languages used in Burma. The second kyat was reintroduced in 1943 and was subdivided into 100 cents, but was soon replaced by Burmese rupee again in 1945 with subdivision of 16 pe (equal to the Indian anna), each of 4 pyas (equal to the Indian pice).

The exchange rate of Myanmar kyat (Burmese kyat) and the U.S. dollar is 1 USD= 864.2766 MMK as per date of February 28, 2013.
