Sri Lankan Rupee (LKR) Users

The Sri Lankan Rupee is the currency of Sri Lanka, an island country located in South Asia in the northern Indian Ocean.

Sri Lanka was previously known as Ceylon until 1972 when it became a republic within the Commonwealth and changed its name to Sri Lanka. It declared independence from the United Kingdom in 1948. Prior to that, between 1815 and 1948, it was a British Crown colony known as British Ceylon.

Sri Lankan Rupee History

The Sri Lankan Rupee has been the sole legal tender of Ceylon (Sri Lanka) since January 1, 1872, replacing the British Pound at a rate of 1 LKR = 2 shillings 3 pence.

British Ceylon, the predecessor of Sri Lanka, began using the British Pound in 1825 and later converted to the Indian Rupee area in 1836. The British Pound was legal tender while payments were made in rupees at a rate of 1 pound = 10 rupees. The Rupee was decimalized on August 23, 1871, and the Sri Lankan Rupee (LKR) was introduced with a subdivision of 1 rupee = 100 cents.

As of February 27, 2013, the exchange rate of Sri Lankan Rupee to the British Pound was 1 GBP = 192.948 LKR.

Sri Lankan Rupee Coins and Banknotes

The Sri Lankan Rupee is subdivided into 100 cents. Currently, in circulation, coins are available in denominations of 1, 2, 5, 10 rupees, and banknotes are available in denominations of 10, 20, 50, 100, 500, 1000, 2000, and 5000 rupees. However, coins of 1 cent, 2 cents, 5 cents, 10 cents, 25 cents, and 50 cents, as well as the 200-rupee banknote, are not frequently used.

Sri Lankan Rupee and the Currency of Rupee

The first rupee was introduced in the sixteenth century and is still being used by many countries, including India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Mauritius, Seychelles, Maldives, and Indonesia (as the rupiah). It was formerly used in Burma, Afghanistan, and many countries in the Persian Gulf and the Arabian Peninsula.

Sri Lanka started using the rupee since 1836.
