The Myanmar Kyat (also known as Burmese Kyat) is the currency of Myanmar (also known as Burma), a country in Southeast Asia.

Burma became an independent republic from the United Kingdom on January 4, 1948, named the Union of Burma. The country's name was renamed from Burma to Myanmar in 1989, with the official full name as the Republic of the Union of Myanmar. However, some countries still continue to use the term "Union of Burma" instead. Both "Burma" and "Myanmar" are derived from the name of the Bamar, which is the dominant Burmese ethnic group.

Myanmar Kyat (Burmese Kyat) History

The currently circulating Myanmar Kyat (Burmese Kyat) was introduced on July 1, 1952, replacing the Burmese rupee at par. It is a decimal currency with a subdivision of 100 pya.

The first kyat was used in Burma between the years 1852 and 1889. The first kyat coinage was denominated in both silver and gold, with 16 silver kyats equivalent to 1 gold kyat. From 1852 to 1942, the Burmese rupee was used, which was the Indian rupee featuring languages used in Burma. The second kyat was reintroduced in 1943 and was subdivided into 100 cents, but was soon replaced by the Burmese rupee again in 1945 with a subdivision of 16 pe (equal to the Indian anna), each of 4 pyas (equal to the Indian pice).
